Powells Book Store

By Jolynne Ash

December 9th, 2006 ·

Powell’s Books located at 10th and Burnside in downtown Portland is the worlds largest privately owned book store (four million books on shelf).  It encompasses an entire City block three stories high, with ten foot shelves filled with new and used books from all over the world.  To say this store is overwhelming is an understatement.  When you visit, plan to stay at least two hours and bring a lunch (or each at their cafe).  Each room of this giant warehouse style building is color coded to make it easier to get around.  They have provided computer terminals in every room which makes it much easier to find what you are looking for.  If you prefer that personal touch, staff members are always available to assist you.

This is destination shopping at it’s best.  Across the street is one of Portland’s largest low cost parking garages.  Since the book store is located on the edge of the Pearl District, you have your choice of over 30 restaurants and countless shops to visit along the way.  The free streetcar also runs  up and down 10th and 11th Aves. so you can head into any of the other areas of the City.   Come at night in December and see all the lighted trees and store fronts, it is magical.
