Sherwood Holiday Parade

By Jolynne Ash

December 27th, 2006 ·

Every year the roads of Old Town Sherwood are closed for the Holiday Parade and the lighting of the city Christmas tree.  Mrs. Claus shows up to welcome the Christmas season to Sherwood.  This year was a little different as the new Library/City Hall building is complete and it was decided that the event would be centered there rather than in the center of Old Town.

Mrs. Claus waited on the stage while the parade wound through town. The parade consisted of local groups, school bands, kids, fire trucks, etc. Candy was thrown to all those watching along the route.  Once at the stage, Mrs. Claus welcomed everyone and ushered in the festivities. The local boy scouts led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the High School Marching Band and various local singing groups. Santa was available for the kids to talk with and give their lists to.  The tree, in its’ new location, was lit. Some lights didn’t work, so there are kinks to work out for next year.  (Unfortunately, one of our great wind storms broke the tree in half.)

For all that attended, there were free hot dogs, cocoa, cider and cookies to enjoy.  A great community feel!
