Utilized in millions of homes as a form of piping and insulation throughout the 20th century, asbestos is a highly corrosive building material that featured unique fire and heat resistant qualities. The real-estate world is a fast paced industry where decisions need to be made in a quick and orderly fashion.
If you are remodeling, purchasing or foreclosing an older home, it is important to hire professionals to examine the property for toxic building materials. Homes or buildings built prior to 1980 remain a likely source for containing asbestos.
Potential Oregon home buyers need be aware that exposure to asbestos can cause significant health concerns. Although not all asbestos is harmful, frequent or long term exposure can increase the chances of developing an asbestos-related illness. There are now a number of alternative forms of insulation which replace the need for asbestos entirely.
A rare form of asbestos lung cancer known as malignant mesothelioma is caused solely from exposure to asbestos. Although medical research and technology continues to improve, mesothelioma treatment has varied affects on patients. Because of the potential health effects of exposure to asbestos, it is recommended that homebuyers hire professionals to determine whether asbestos containing building materials are present.
Organizations in the Pacific Northwest such as Environment Oregon have been important in removal methods of asbestos and other toxic materials which serve as a threat to many people’s health.  The organization is trying to attain tax credits for people and families who generate renewable energy. If asbestos is deemed harmful by an inspector and should be removed, it must be performed by a licensed abatement contractor.
Once the removal is complete, green alternatives should be considered, such as: cotton fiber, lcynene foam and cellulose. Not only will eco-friendly materials provide a healthy atmosphere, it can significantly reduce energy costs. Current statistics demonstrates that the use of recycled building materials such as cotton fiber insulation can reduce energy use in the home by 25 percent. Alternatives to asbestos allow for you and your family to live in a healthy and safe home, free of health corroding materials.
